Purpose
Picture yourself a new student in Japan and you speak little to no Japanese. You walk into your first class and they are speaking Japanese, what would make you more comfortable in this classroom as you walk in?
If I were to be this new student I would like to have material in my native language to help me with the conversion. It would be great to see posters on the walls in both languages, models around the room that had english and Japanese markings and some sort of reading material to go along with the class that can be read prior to the lesson. This is to help increase both learning the new language and the material.
As a new monolingual teacher in biology I have found it difficult to find quality material that I could pass onto my students that speak other languages. Here at TranslingualismToday this web site is dedicated to accumulating that much needed quality information and distributing this website as a repository. I have included some other good information that you can implement into your biology curriculum directly that is culturally responsive also. Don't be afraid to show our youth tougher concepts than you think they can handle. We need to push them to succeed.
